300-03: Inspection And Certification By Manufacturer

The manufacturer shall establish the necessary quality control and inspection procedures to ensure compliance with this standard. All flanges shall be clean and sound without defects that could impair their service.

Repairing of defects by welding or other methods shall not be allowed if such repairs could adversely affect the serviceability of the flange or its capability to meet strength requirements of this standard.

Markings

The flanges shall have cast or stamped upon them the water working
pressure, nominal diameter, manufactures name or identification symbol,
country where cast, and the letters "DI" for ductile iron or "CI" for
cast iron.

Acceptance Tests

Physical Test - Ductile Iron

The standard acceptance test for the physical characteristics of
ductile Iron flanges shall be a tensile test from coupons cast from the
same iron as the fittings. The coupons shall be cast and the test made
in accordance with ASTM A536. Either the keel block or the Y block
shall be used as the test coupon at the option of the manufacturer.

Acceptance Values

The standard grades of Ductile Iron shall be 70-50-05 or 60-42-10 with acceptance values as follows:

  • Minimum Tensile Strength: 70,000 or 60,000
  • Minimum Yield Strength: 50,000 or 42,000
  • Minimum Elongation: 5% or 10%

Physical Test - Gray Iron

The standard acceptance test for the physical characteristics of Gray Iron flanges shall be one of the following:

  • Transverse Test conducted in accordance with ASTM A438.
  • Tensile Test conducted in accordance with ASTM A48. The minimum acceptance value shall be 30,000 psi tensile strength.
